What makes the DTS Different?

The DTS is a full-time live-in course that helps provide a holistic ‘live – learn’ environment. It recognises that our learning does not just happen in the classroom but also through putting what we hear into practice as we: live in community, participate in small group discussions, receive one-on-one discipleship, and more.

Elements of a DTS include:

Praise & Worship

Having regular times of worship throughout the school that give you an opportunity to encounter & experience Him

Prayer & Intercession

Learning how to spend time in intercession so that you can hear what is on God’s heart for the nations and pray into it

Biblical Meditation

Engaging more deeply with God’s Word in a way you can understand and apply to how you can grow in your own life

One-on-Ones

Meeting every week with a DTS Staff Member to give you further opportunities to process what God is doing in you

Small Groups

Taking the opportunity to meet in a smaller group to discuss, learn together, encourage and pray for one another and just hang out

Assignments

Completing a weekly journal, some book reports, and special one-off projects to help your understanding reach a deeper level

Work Duties

Lending a hand to keep our wider YWAM community functioning well, with maintenance, kitchen help, administration, etc.

Practical Ministry

Being involved weekly in YWAM projects or other ministries in the city – bringing help to those who are in need

Having Fun

Participating in Games, Sports, BBQ’s, Trips, and more, all contribute to this essential part of the DTS experience.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Still have questions?  Click on the drop-down below to discover the questions most often asked by students, parents, and pastors.

Q: Where will I stay?
A: YWAM Penang provides accommodation for all the students to stay together, usually in dorm situations in local houses.

Q: I live in Penang, can I still live at home?
A: The DTS is a 24/7 ‘live-in’ school. As part of the course you are required to live with the other students in community, even though you are local.

Q: What’s the schedule like?
A: The schedule is full-time with different activities including some of the weekends. From lectures in the mornings, praise & worship, prayer, small groups, one-on-one discipleship, serving the community through work duties, and ministry, including some evenings.

Q: Will the students go to their own churches on Sundays or does the DTS have its own service?
A: We do not have a DTS service. We encourage students to ‘adopt’ a church while they are here in Penang and attend each week making it their ‘church away from home.’. For local students, they may continue to attend their own church.

Q: Who are the teachers?
A: Live guest lecturers are the norm. Those who teach are other YWAM leaders, nationally and internationally, local YWAM staff, and other reputable speakers who are involved in the church locally or internationally. Occasionally, video lectures will be used.

Q: Can I just complete the lecture phase?
A: Unfortunately, no. The DTS is designed to include the lecture phase (learning) and outreach phase (practice) together. In fact, for most students the outreach phase is the highlight – the time when they grow in their relationship with God the most and see amazing things happen in and through them.

Q: Where do the students stay?
A: YWAM Penang provides accommodation for all the students to stay together, usually in dorm situations in local houses. DTS Staff will also be living in the house with them.

Q: We live in Penang, can my son / daughter still live at home?
A: The DTS is a 24/7 ‘live-in’ school. As part of the course all students are required to be resident for the duration of the course.

Q: What happens during Chinese New Year? Can my son / daughter come home?
A: We recognise that for many Malaysian students Chinese New Year is a significant time for family. Depending on the precise dates of Chinese New Year, and if we are not on the outreach phase, we usually have a 3-4 day break in the school calendar. We encourage Malaysian students to invite international students home with them during this time to experience this part of the Chinese Malaysian culture.

Q: Will the students go to their own churches on Sundays or does DTS have their own service?
A: We do not have a DTS service. We encourage students to ‘adopt’ a church while they are here in Penang and attend each week making it their ‘church away from home.’. For local students, they may continue to attend their own church.

A: Live guest lecturers are the norm. Those who teach are other YWAM leaders, nationally and internationally, local YWAM staff, and other reputable speakers who are involved in the church locally or internationally. Occasionally, video lectures will be used.

Q: How are applicants selected?
A: To be eligible for a course, students must first meet the initial entry requirements (age, English proficiency, prerequisites) and successfully submit a completed application and accompanying reference forms. Offers of placement on a course are then based upon an assessment of the extent to which the experience, qualifications, aspirations, and Christian character & calling of the applicant align with the goals of the school.

Q: Does YWAM have a denominational affiliation?
A: YWAM is an international, interdenominational organisation with staff & students from a broad range of denominational backgrounds.

Q: How should I communicate with my son / daughter while they’re at YWAM Penang?
A: Due to the varied schedule of the DTS, its best to agree on a convenient time to connect with your son / daughter, whether it’s through mobile phone, skype or email. Generally, students are busy during the week all mornings so we ask that you do not try and contact them during this time unless it’s an emergency.
