TWO guidelines govern SMC Penang Community Life:
- Be Responsible
Luke 16:10-12 "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with
very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will
trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else's property, who will give you property
of your own?"
If you open it, close it.
If you turn it on, turn it off.
If you unlock it, lock it back up.
If you break it, repair it or pay for it.
If you cannot fix it, report it properly.
If you borrow it, return it.
If you use it, take care of it.
If you make a mess, clean it up.
If it belongs to someone else, get permission before using it.
If you move it, put it back.
If you are not sure how it operates, leave it alone.
- Prefer Others
Philippians 2:3-4 "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than
yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others."
TELEPHONE USE
Telephones in the base houses are available for staff and students. Please be conservative with length and frequency
of calls as several people share a single telephone line and it is important to keep phone lines clear for inter-house
communication. The base pays for local calls within the 04 area code but calls made to hand-phones, long distance calls,
or local information calls (#103) should be made using pre-paid phone cards. There are many excellent phone cards available
at shops near the base. We ask that you use cards which use 1-800 numbers to access their services rather than those cards
that use local number connections. Please DO NOT make calls using calling cards purchased in your home country as there is
a high local charge for such calls.
FAX MACHINE
A fax machine in the base office is available for staff and student use. Please pay RM 50 cents per page for each
fax received. The base fax number is 6-04-890-2214.
E-MAIL
High speed internet and e-mail access is provided for staff and students at our base internet café for a reasonable
fee.

LAUNDRY
At least one washing machine is available for use at each base house. Cost per load is RM 1 and should be placed
within the laundry container near the phone immeadiatley after use. Detergent is available at the local mini-market. The
base provides clotheslines, clothespins and hangers.
CHURCH
There are many excellent churches of different denominations in the area that are accessible by bus, taxi, or by
traveling with SMC Penang staff.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
In keeping with the vision of the base, all staff and students will be actively involved in Community Outreach. This
can include prayer/intercession, coffee house ministry, Bible studies, relationship building, language learning, etc.
MOVIE/TV
We request that all music played and movies shown on the base, both publicly and privately, be consistent with our
values as a Christian community. The base TV, VCR, VCD, and DVD players are available on weekends (Friday evening until
Sunday evening) for staff and student use. During the weekdays the television is limited to local and international news
broadcasts. Please refrain from viewing/showing pirated movies on base equipment.
CIGARETTES, ALCOHOL & DRUGS
Tobacco, alcohol, and illegal, non-prescription drugs are not permitted on the base. In order to avoid offense we ask
that you abstain from alcoholic beverages at all times while a staff or student of SMC Penang. Questions concerning this
matter can be directed to the base leader.
CLOTHING
As we are a multicultural base in a sensitive nation, please come prepared to dress neatly and modestly
whether in class, in your home, or in town. Please do not wear short shorts, sleeveless shirts/blouses/tanks, spaghetti
strap shirts/tanks or shirts/blouses that expose the midriff. We also ask that staff and students wear modest swim
suits (one-piece or tankini sets are preferred. No bikinis please).
WORK DUTIES
Staff and Students alike will contribute to the overall cleanliness of the base by participating in practical chores
ranging from meal cleanup and lawn care to secretarial work or childcare.
CLEANING HOUSES AND ROOMS
In addition to work duties, staff and students are asked to keep their house, car porch, backyard, lawn areas and
personal rooms clean and neat.
VACATING ROOMS
Prior to leaving for school outreaches or BTPS Church Placement students are asked to thoroughly clean their rooms and
pack up personal items. There may be some storage space available for those with neatly packed, clearly labeled (Name,
Permanent address and telephone number) storage containers. The base cannot be responsible for items stored at the base
that are lost, damaged, or stolen.
VACATION TIME
We encourage all staff to take four weeks of holiday each year and two months for itinerating every two years. Staff
holidays are co-ordinated through the base leadership team (BLT) to ensure that adequate staff is present at the base at
all times.
